I was astonished by this book because I don’t think I’ve ever actually read anything like it, where the heroine really does wait around passively until a man saves her. While Harriet believes that Rom will shortly leave eeva, Rom intends to propose to Harriet, but is disturbed by her occasionally distant attitude, which he believes is distress at being forced to abandon her promising ballet career.
Also it’s good to bear in mind Ibbotson wrote this with an adult audience in mind and it wasn’t marketed to children of any age until a reprinting in the United States. Tons of Ballet and fun and love and mysterious attractive people. However, predictable misunderstandings can still make ibbotskn a good plot if done right. One could call it an attempt to write, in words, a good Viennese waltz!

There is certainly nothing overtly objectionable about him. I confess I don’t know much about it, my semester was spent studying at Oxford. There Harriet ventures off by herself and encounters the young lord of the manor, a lonely boy name Henry, whose family is plagued with financial and other burdens. I mean, it’s not gratuitous or anything, it’s simply that Ibbotson completely changes the character and then the character loves the fact that she’s being immoral.
Views Read Edit View history. It’s part believable YA historical novel, and part Harlequinesque romance. I wouldn’t have read it except that Chara was so insistent that this was her favorite Ibbotson book she had ever read which, considering she has read all of two, only says so much.
Oct 09, D. The always-serious Professor Morton expected his daughter to marry the man he had chosen. Here’s one passage about dance: I thought she was terribly stupid when she allows herself to be draped in a negligee and taken in front of a man. Well, I would have liked it so much better if Ibbotson could write one book that portrayed love with anything approaching a true understanding of it. I felt like her life began to revolve around the guy, and she was a bit obsessive.

However, Swane am a sucker for a book, any book, and particularly for a highly recommended book. And so I read A Company of Swans. I lost any interest I had in and for Rom too. Still, a good author can make even the most bare bones scaffolding cojpany like that opera swanw. To a freedom unlike any she had known swanx. The plot was rather predictable, the love story and the two characters it concerned cloying to my inner cynic, and the other characters weren’t particularly memorable but still interesting to read about.
Shortly after this incident, Harriet joins Edward, Aunt Louisa and the rest of the Trumpington Tea Circle on a tour of Stavely, an old stately home which is beginning to fall into disrepair. Her only solace is ballet class. So she did the only thing she could: All these and other ‘but’s’ decided about my rating.
Ibbotson said she dislikes “financial greed and a lust for power” and often creates antagonists in her books who have these characteristics. I’d give it 2.

For even in class there are those who dance the notes and those who dance the music. The character’s were not particularly original or deep- Rom was basically a direct transposition of Mr.
Class, that unfailing daily torture to which dancers come on every morning of ibnotson lives. The Amazonian setting is so lushly described. I love the way that even in the first short line of the book, Eva Ibbotson manages to suggest both unseen lecturing voices and Harriet’s reluctance acquiesence – There was no lovelier view in England, Harriet knew this.
If only Romeo had had such common sense, indeed
